Foundation Thoughts. We all have thoughts that we rely on as we go about our vocations. We may have learned them, heard something that ‘struck a chord’ or come to a conclusion based on our experience of what works and what does not. As situations arise, we ‘play’ those thoughts and leverage the thoughts to deal with them. They are our ‘foundation thoughts’.
‘Secrets’. Rarely do we define exactly what we are thinking, and if we do, we seldom write it down. Even more rarely do we share those thoughts. They remain secret, even though they are the foundations of our success.
Not Cut Out for Sales. I commenced my sales career selling electronic components and soon realised that I had no idea what it took to be a successful salesperson. Moving rapidly through 2 short stints I believed that “I would never make a salesperson”. I was not ‘cut out for it’ so I started my own telecommunications business which provided well for our growing family for 5 years and provided capital to start, operate and sell another parallel fast food business that is still operating today. Needing a new challenge and facing industry ‘headwind’, I exited both businesses and was enticed into real estate sales. Within 6 months I was a sales leader in the group and rapidly moved into sales management. After 2 years in Real Estate, I knew I needed to get back to technology, again thinking that I was not ‘cut out for sales’ even though I had been highly successful.
Thoughts I Used But Didn’t Share. Upon exiting real estate, I realised that I had no understanding about the art of sales. It wasn’t until I happened across a sales book that I even worked out what I had unconsciously done to be successful. It was here that I realised that I had to educate myself in the discipline of sales, and later management/leadership, to be highly successful. Over an extensive career, I accumulated a wealth of thoughts that I kept as ‘secrets’ because it never occurred to me that anyone would be interested in my thoughts.
Sharing the Secrets. Looking back over my career and running some numbers, it turned out that I had personally sold well over $100M of tangible and intangible products/services and lead organisations that turned over $billions. Add to that, I had successfully started, operated and exited small businesses, lead many successful sales teams, managed companies through several great and not so great times, and been a key part of divestments, mergers and acquisitions. It is high time to ‘share the Secrets’.
Top Secrets for Sales Success. This book is the result of considering the ‘secrets’ that I used through my extensive and successful career. It contains 101 secrets that I regularly referred to. They are the outcome of continual reading, participating in various courses/education and ‘truisms’ that were forged in the face of the highs and the lows of an extensive career. I only wish that I had access to this book when I started out and along the way. I know first hand that if just one of these ‘Secrets’ inspires the reader to greater success, they will make a massive return on their investment in buying it. Even better if the book inspires them to define their own Secrets and then leverage those to achieve great things.
